X Ray Technician Schools - Training For A Rewarding Career As A Radiology Tech

If the field of radiology interests you, start looking into x ray technician schools today. There is a high demand for x ray technicians, also known as x ray technologists or radiology technicians, and you can even do your training online, as long as it is from an accredited course. In 2007, there were over 600 committee accredited courses in the US though, so finding a program is not difficult.

 A radiology tech is responsible for caring for the patients before they get their tests done, answering any questions they might have and comforting them, and controlling the imaging machines to take the pictures they need.
 
Online or physical x ray technican schools offer different programs, with the most basic one being a certificate program of 1 year. To get into the certificate course, which teaches basic patient care and protection with lead blankets, you will need to have completed algebra and chemistry courses. With such great advances in diagnostic imagine machines, being an x ray technologist will be a lucrative position at least through 2014.

Other x ray technician training can be in the form of an associates degree or bachelors degree at university, but most basic training will take under 2 years to complete and up to 4 years for a more advanced program.

Generally the 1 year certificate programs cater to members of other medical fields who want to transfer over, while a 4 year bachelor's or master's degree is really only necessary if you want to go into administration, teaching or supervisor positions. The 2 year degree is the most common.

You can also receive training through vocational schools and even through the hospital directly. Once completed though, most states do require you to become licensed or certified from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

In any of these programs you will learn about anatomy, physiology, patient care, radiobiology, radiation physics and protection and medical terminology. Additionally you will need to follow courses in how to position a patient, proper medical ethics and imaging principles.

With additional experience and training, you can also become skilled at using CT machines, MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging), Ultrasounds and performing angiography, where you x ray blood vessels to find clots. Also depending on if you choose a sub-speciality, you could even become an expert in diagnostics of the heart, chest, brain or skeletal system, amongst many others.

With all the x ray technician schools available and all the different x ray technologist programs out there, it is not a hard decision to make to dedicate at least a year of your life to start a very lucrative and in demand career. With the economy in such instability, a stable career in the medical field would mean security for you and your family.
