Job Description

A radiologist or radiolgy technician is responsible for conducting tests like x-rays, CT scans or MRIs in order to take images of the patient and send them to the doctor to analyse and diagnose. To do this, the technician must first have good patient care skills, as he will be the one to explain the procedure and instruct the patient on how to position himself and what to expect.

The technician will then place the equipment properly to capture the right angle and image to take, or if softer tissue needs to be photographed, the technician will prepare and administer a solution for the patient to drink that will highlight the required tissues. The more experienced the technician is, the more complex the equipment he can handle, and so to begin this journey, there is a different radiology program offered for different levels.

Radiology Degrees

To become a radiology technician, there are 3 degree choices. All radiology technician schools will cover subjects like anatomy and physiology, radio physics and biology, ethics, patient care and medical terminology. There is a 1 year certificate program offered, but this is generally reserved for any radiology nurses or other people with previous experience in the radiology field.

The most common degree for anyone starting out is the associate's degree. This is a 2 year degree that will train you to start working as a junior technician and allow you to start gaining on the job experience. Finally there is a radiology bachelor's degree, which is a 4 year program and goes into advanced details of radiology. The bachelor's degree is recommended for anyone who intends to go into teaching or wants to become a supervisor or administrator in the future.

Radiology Careers

With your associate's degree behind you, you now have many options of work in the field. Most radiology careers are offered at hospitals but you can find jobs in private clinics. You can also decide on a specialty, as there are many within this field, including breast specialists, head and neck radiology, pediatric, cardiovascular, chest and emergency radiology.

You could also become a radiologist's assistant who works under the supervision of the radiologist and helps in more complex procedures and in examining and evaluating patients. You could also be a technologist, who generally helps the radiologist by handling the equipment and positioning the patient, or a radiologic nurse, which is a position found in larger institutes involving catering directly to patient needs and setting up a patient care plan.
