Radiologic Technologist Continuing Education

A radiology tech that is certified through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART) will need to complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years in order to keep their certification. There are a variety of options for Radiologic Technologist Continuing Education  or Radiology Continuing medical Education CME available.

Credits Needed For Completion

Radiologic Technologist Continuing Education

Continuing Education credits can be obtained through directed readings, seminars, online courses, and home study courses. The amount of credits earned through any one activity or course varies. Some types of education require an exam before CE credit is given, others only require proof of attendance. Basically, anything you do not attend in person usually requires an exam so that they know you actually did the reading or the at home study course.

On Probation

If the required amount of Continuing Education is not completed, the Radiology Tech is placed on CE probation and given a year to catch up the necessary credits. If the credits are not completed within the year, no further extensions will be given and the Radiology Tech's certification will be cancelled, meaning the Radiology Tech will need to pass an exam again in order to become recertified, as well as keep up with the appropriate continuing education courses.

Accredited Courses

Some of the organizations that provide approved Radiologic Technologist Continuing Education courses include the Virtual Lecture Hall, the FastCE website, Radiological Services, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, GE Healthcare, and Sinclair Community College. There are a lot of different topics to choose from, including computed radiography, diabetes, medical charting and diagnostics, pharmacology, respiratory care, ionic contrast media, ergonomics, mammography, radiography, MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, radiation safety, ultrasound, and many, many others.

In order to prove that the required Radiologic Technologist Continuing Education credits have been earned, they need to be submitted to the ARRT by a certain deadline. Upon receiving their initial certification the timeline for reporting these continuing education credits is given to the Radiologic Tech so that they know when each two year period will be finished and when the credits need to be submitted by to be in compliance with the ARRT requirements.

Radiology Techs are given some leeway in deciding which continuing education courses to complete. They are supposed to be relevant to their job, but they can't be so specific to a particular company that other radiology techs wouldn't be able to use the information in the use of their jobs as well. A course on how to sell a new product wouldn't be applicable, for example.
